News: Welsh Assembly supports opencast moratorium; minister refuses to back it

“Calls for a moratorium on open-cast mining have been rejected by a Welsh Government minister – despite AMs giving the plan their backing during a Senedd debate. Natural Resources Minister Carl Sargeant suggested a moratorium on open-cast mining would not resolve problems around the issue. Instead he blamed the UK Government and promised a summit on the issue and to undertake a review that would look at how restoration works are funded.
